PG Department of BotanyNatural ScienceAbout the DepartmentThe Department of Botany was established in 1968. Previously it was known as Department of Biology since 1956. Post Graduation in Botany commenced from 2017. Under Graduation in Botany General Course was started from 1956, and the Botany Honours Course was started from 1968. The hallmark of this department is its excellent infrastructure facilities. The department has well-equipped laboratories to cater to the demand of Post Graduate courses; facilities of carrying out Plant Tissue Culture, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Cytology and all courses of PG Botany. There has separate classrooms with all modern facilities, teaching through audio-visual aids used for ICT based techniques and facility of good Seminar Library. The Department has advanced instruments such as UV-visible spectrophotometer, gel electrophoresis (AGE & PAGE), RT-PCR, Incubated shaker, BOD Incubator, advanced binocular microscope with digital camera & PC attachment, ultra-centrifuge, computer with internet facility for students, and Plant tissue culture Lab facility to pursue practical classes or research of high standard, along with facility of dissertation/ project work under special paper, assistance by Boost-Program, DBT, Govt. of West Bengal. PG Botany students uptake regular training on GIS and Remote Sensing with Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun. Department is also planning to sign MOU with other nearby College(s) for organizing conferences, faculty and student exchange programs. Our vision is to inculcate and impart classical and applied knowledge of Botany and practice social, environmental and biological ethics to excel in universal human values for leading a life in harmony with the environment to attain sustainability. Our Mission is to make the students to realize their innate potential to become self-directed and life-long learning personalities for playing various roles and responsibilities. And to make responsible employees, entrepreneurs, and scientists who may excel beyond the curriculum. Ultimately to meet the real-world needs and solve problems of humanity with the help of Botanical knowledge. Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in PG Botany requires B.Sc. (Hons) in Botany / Graduation in Life Science. Special Papers offered are 1) Cytogenetics & Plant Tissue Culture, 2) Plant Physiology, Bio-chemistry and Plant Molecular Biology, 3) Biosystematics & Biodiversity Conservation, and 4) Phycology & Advanced Biotechnology. |
