HISTORY OF ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College was established in Bon-Hooghly in the year 1956 with the aim of providing higher education, and was named after Brahmananda Keshab Chandra Sen, the great socio-religious reformer of the country, during Renaissance. From the beginning I.Sc under Biological Science scheme was started. In the year 1957 Prof. Shankar Nath Paul , Lecturer in Botany and in the year 1959, Prof. Ajit Ranjan Sengupta , lecturer in Zoology joined the department of Biological Science. In the year 1967, the Governing Body of the College in one of its meeting (16.10.1967) considered the scheme of Biological Science will be separated into Botany and Zoology as separate department and the proposal was forwarded to D.P.I for approval. Ultimately from 21.1.1969 the Biological Science department was separated into two independent departments namely Botany and Zoology. From the inception of the Zoology department Prof. Ajit Ranjan Sengupta was the Head of the Department and Zoology General Stream was started. At that time students were required to sit for three examinations (Part-I, Part-II and Part –III) one at the end of each year conducted by the University. In the academic year 1978-79 Zoology Honours course was started under the headship of Prof. Ajit Ranjan Sengupta. Since the beginning many eminent lecturers have served the department. At present seven Assistant professors with several specialization and one laboratory assistant are serving the department. During the entire period many eminent Professor and scientists visited the department and delivered lectures. The department is enriched with two class room cum laboratories, one smart classroom and tow common classroom (share with other department). One of the laboratories is enriched with numerous preserved specimens, many of which are rare in nature. Not only that the Laboratories are also equipped with modern instruments. |
