About the Department

The Department of Physics started its journey in 1956 since the inception of the college. At first only physics pass course was taught and the department was upgraded to honors department from the academic year 1968-69. The department produced some brilliant students in all these years who have served different institutes and universities within India and abroad. It has grown over the years and has got sanction to start the Post Graduate Course in Physics under West Bengal State University from the current session 2022-23.

At present there are seven full time faculties in the department with different specialization who are engaged in active research work. The department has well developed laboratories with state of art infrastructure. Moreover, many new instruments have been purchased which are under the CBCS curriculum. Recently the laboratory has been renovated and new classrooms and practical rooms have been added to the department. There is a separate computer center dedicated for the students of this department.

Students give seminar and publish wall magazine regularly with guidance from the teachers. The department arranges special lectures by eminent physicists which motivate the students. They are also taken to visit the nearby research laboratory.
