Department of Botany

About the Department

The Department of Botany was established in 1968. Previously it was known as Department of Biology since 1956. Post graduation in Botany commenced from 2017. Under Graduate in Botany General Course was started from 1956, and the Botany Honours Course was started from 1968. The hallmark of this department is its excellent infrastructure facilities. The department has well-equipped laboratories to cater to the demand of Under Graduate Honours and General courses; facilities of carrying out Plant Tissue Culture, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Cytology and all classical branches of Botany. There has separate classrooms with all modern facilities, teaching through audio-visual aids used for ICT based techniques, facility of good Seminar Library, and Computer with internet facility for students.

The vision of the department is to inculcate students with scientific temperament, environmental awareness & prepare them to face challenges in life. The mission of the department is to provide quality training in the field of plant sciences and to sharpen students towards the need for conserving natural resources. The study of Botany is crucial as plants are an essential piece of life on the planet. The curriculum for the B.Sc. Botany Program has been designed with an aim of encouraging the broad instructional goals and to support the growing demands and challenging trends in the educational scenario. It targets at providing an environment that encourages, promotes and stimulates the intellectual, professional and personal development of the student. The curriculum caters to the all-round development of the student, preparing globally ready individuals into the fast-pacing world. A bachelor's degree program in Botany provides the foundation for prospective botanists to pursue a graduate level education or find an entry-level career.

The course introduces students to the importance of plants as an integral part of existence on the planet. It is imperative to internalize fully the fact that human existence depends on plants and hence, the necessity to conserve nature is the need of the hour. A few activities are conducted at the end of each semester which are relevant to the topics covered. Algal collections, mushroom cultivation, educational visits to tissue culture labs, plant collection trips, industrial trips, project works, maintenance of plant diversity on campus are few of the activities. These activities enable the students to study the subject outside the classroom environment.

The Department has established an "Eco Club" and "Phyto-Friend" for developing academic, environmental, cultural and social enthusiasm of students. It also conducts Students' Seminars, debates, poster competitions and Project Assignments on syllabus topics, medicinal plants, Pollution issues and Biodiversity Conservation of the adjacent Bon-Hooghly lake. The Department has an annual magazine "Science and Society" initiated from 2022 by the Sir Jagadish Chandra Eco Club of the Department. The Eco Club awards Botany Students of final semester UG & PG with 'Best All Rounder' Certificate to motivate students towards character building and responsible citizenship.
